As the thirty-ninth President of the Birmingham Medical Institute, it gives me much pleasure to welcome you to this historic organisation. There are three long-established institutes of this nature in the United Kingdom, still with their own premises – the Medical Society of London, the Liverpool Medical Institution and the younger BMI, founded in 1875. In the Midlands, no other postgraduate medical society can boast such a continuous history. We are currently making extensive changes to the building and to what we offer members, including improved services and conference facilities. Professor Keith Shinton |
